It’s about the money

In a move that comes as something of a surprise, the Japanese government has announced that it is planning to bear some of the costs for cleanup efforts on the west coast of the US and Canada. I’ve poked around a little and heard the figure of $1,000,000 dollars being bandied about.
I’m not sure how I feel about this… while much of the debris that is clogging the beaches out there is Japanese in origin, there’s a lot of Chinese, Korean and Taiwanese trash as well, not to mention the stuff that is more domestic, the Cheetos bags and root beer bottles born in the USA. My first reaction is that it speaks well about a culture that recognizes a problem and devotes a significant chunk of change to try to make a difference.
My second thought is that I wish our society was more like that.
