Division of labor

The Ikkatsu crew got together yesterday evening for what will probably be our last meeting before we begin the second leg of the expedition. The sun was shining on the water off Steilacoom and the air had  the feel of summer to it. (Which is only right, of course. It is supposed to be summer, after all.)
Topics of conversation were scattered, a bit about filming and some more about food. We looked at the map and tried to figure out the where and the when of the upcoming surveys, along with which camps would be inaccessible at low tide, and there will be a few of them. (There are places, notably between Cape Alava and Yellow Banks, where the low tide reveals wide swaths of rocky reef. Tide-pool country. It’s great for exploring on foot but there’s no practical way to land or launch a kayak in these spots until the water comes back in.) Which is not necessarily bad news, it’s just that we’ll need to plan to time our surveys with the celestial clock and get out on the water when the getting is good.
One of the things that I really want to accomplish along this stretch of coastline between Hobuck and La Push is a good sight survey of the islands and stacks we’ll encounter along the way. Many of them don’t really have any beaches where debris might be able to stick, but some of them do. They vary in size from simple stone pillars to full-blown islands and it will be interesting to see if any of them are attracting any flotsam.
The meeting identified some of the things that need to get done before we head out and we each came away with a list of what we need to make happen. I spent part of yesterday packing so most of that is done and what remains can be finished on Sunday. Most of what I need to do consists of little tasks, but it’s the little stuff that’ll get you if you don’t pay attention.
