Salmon Beach – Olympia

The first day of the Olympic Grand Circle is in the books. It took about 8 hours for me and Adam to get to Olympia from Salmon Beach, with a lunch stop on Eagle Island. It rained off and on the whole time, but the wind never really was a factor. Which was nice.

I’m struck once again by the beauty and relative wildness of south Puget Sound. In a place where people are unquestionably the dominant species (in terms of sheer numbers), there is a whole world of nature spinning along almost unnoticed. We saw porpoise at several different points along the way, surfacing close to our boats, then diving again. Eagles in the trees, otter on the shore. Didn’t see any whales, but I know they’re out there too.
Today will be a different kind of day, an exploration of the connection between Capital Lake and Black Lake, before canoeing out from Black Lake tomorrow. There will be a slog up Percival Creek to an old canal… beyond that, I don’t know exactly.
