Gray

There are sea lions out there again this morning. They come in close, then glide out toward the middle of the Narrows, riding the currents. I can hear them breathing. It’s a hard, gray morning, the clouds thick and heavy with water, getting ready to drop another load of rain. The air is cold, but not as cold as it has been lately – I haven’t lit the stove yet. I don’t feel ready for another Washington winter, this middling climate that we endure around here. Neither warm nor cold, not always raining but never dry, and with a desperate lack of actual sunlight. And this is only November.
I’m thinking of going for a paddle, but the thinking about it has already got me tired.
