Just paddling

I got an email this morning, with a photo included. (Thanks Lee!) Something of a blast from the past, from a time that seems much further away than a paltry dozen years ago… more like a dozen decades. Published in the Downhomer magazine in Newfoundland, it’s a picture of me in Quidi Vidi Harbour and a short write-up of how I’d made it across the top of the Avalon Peninsula and was getting ready to tackle the next leg of the trip through Bonavista Bay.
I look at the young man in the photo, waving optimistically at the camera, not understanding the miles that were yet to come. I can see the hope and the drive in that picture, and it takes me back to that sunny morning in Newfoundland when it was taken, and damned if I don’t want to do it all over again.
I will go back to Newfoundland some day. I hope it’s soon. There are still so many places on that rocky isle in the ocean that I have yet to see, and others that I so badly want to see again.
