Hot

I know there’s a drought going on in some places. Heat waves, corn drying out and withering in the fields, triple-digit temperatures and plagues of locusts, but these are the kind of things that happen in other parts of the nation, other parts of the world. In the Northwest, if we get three days in a row where we don’t need to wear goretex, when shirt sleeves will suffice, that’s as close to summer as we can hope for. Usually.
This week, however, the rules have apparently changed. It’s been in the high 80’s and low 90’s for a week now and the forecast calls for the thermostat to go even higher here in the next 48 hours. (95 degrees on Friday? Am I reading that right?)
Just to set the record straight, I am not complaining. I know that this will all pass soon enough and we’ll be back to a more characteristic gloop and the slow-motion rusting noises that will slish malevolently through our collective unconscious, wearing us out from the inside. In another couple of months, the darkness will close in again, morning and evening will look exactly the same and we’ll all be thinking about Hawaii or Costa Rica.
For now though, it’s a heat wave here. I’m getting on the water.
