Against quiet desperation

“A man can stand almost anything except a succession of ordinary days.”
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe said that, and it sounds about right to me. Too many ordinary days, and you’ve got yourself an ordinary life. And who wants that?
I’m looking forward to this weekend’s shakedown paddle around Vashon Island. The premise is that we need the opportunity to see how our gear is going to fit and what shooting techniques we need to work on before this summer’s Ikkatsu Expedition. And that’s all true. We definitely need to get an idea of how to coordinate camera and sound on-water and to get a feel for how much time is needed for certain activities. We’ll also be trying out the plastics trawl for the first time to get the feel for what that part of the mission is going to entail.
I can’t help but think, however, that another reason for going is to make sure that our weekend is at least somewhere outside of “ordinary.”
