Get your bids in…

The National Park Service is getting ready to put the Elwha dam removal project out for bid, with the contract to be awarded by the end of September. According to the Associated Press, proposal requests will go out around the end of March and the timeline on the job calls for the project to take about 3 years, finishing up in 2014.

These dams coming down mean big changes for the Elwha and the Port Angeles area. The Elwha and Glines Canyon dams hold back not only a massive amount of water, but a helluva lot of silt as well. The release is sure to muddy the water for a while. Literally. Construction is finishing up on a nearby salmon hatchery that, it is hoped, will enable the Elwha run to eventually be replenished.

I would like to watch a breach sometime. (See a time-lapse presentation of a smaller dam removal project in Oregon here.)
